Huberdeau, Panthers pad lead in Atlantic with OT win against Maple Leafs
Jonathan Huberdeau scored at 2:47 of overtime, and the Florida Panthers won after being down by four goals for the second time in three games with a 7-6 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs at FLA Live Arena on Tuesday.
Huberdeau won it on a 2-on-1 with Aleksander Barkov.
The Panthers set an NHL record with a fifth victory this season after being down by three goals. They came back from 5-1 to take a 6-5 lead on Barkov’s goal at 8:01 of the third period before John Tavares tied it 6-6 at 16:06 with a power-play goal.
Huberdeau had two goals and three assists and Barkov had a goal and four assists for Florida (49-15-6), which has won five in a row. Sergei Bobrovsky was pulled for a second consecutive start after allowing four goals on 14 shots. Spencer Knight made 19 saves in relief.
Mitchell Marner had two goals and two assists for the Maple Leafs (45-19-6), who had won five in a row.
Marner scored a shorthanded goal and a power-play goal 37 seconds apart, the shortest span in NHL history for one player to do so. Mario Lemieux did it in 47 seconds with the Pittsburgh Penguins against the Chicago Blackhawks on March 12, 1989.
Auston Matthews extended his point streak to 14 games with three assists, and Jake Muzzin scored in his first game since Feb. 21.
Erik Kallgren made 20 saves before leaving the game at 17:16 of the second period when he was hit in the mask by a shot from Robert Hagg. Jack Campbell made 21 saves in relief.
Sam Reinhart scored two power-play goals for the Panthers, and Claude Giroux scored his first goal in eight games since he was acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers on March 19.
Huberdeau scored a power-play goal at 2:45 of the third for his 100th point this season.
Reinhart began the comeback when he made it 5-2 at 11:52 before Radko Gudas scored shorthanded goal at 12:51 to make it 5-3.
Giroux scored at 17:56 to make it 5-4.
Marner’s two goals, at 30 seconds and 1:07 of the second period, gave Toronto a 3-1 lead.
Colin Blackwell made it 4-1 at 2:04 with the goal that chased Bobrovsky before Muzzin made it 5-1 at 8:40.
