Vejmelka makes 45 saves for Coyotes in win against Maple Leafs
Auston Matthews scored in his ninth consecutive road game to set a Toronto Maple Leafs record in a 2-1 loss to the Arizona Coyotes at Gila River Arena on Wednesday.
Matthews had been tied with Daniel Marois (1989-90), Frank Mahovlich (1960-61) and Babe Dye (1920-21) at eight straight road games.
“I would have rather, obviously, taken the win,” Matthews said. “I’m still leaving the rink a little bit sour tonight at not getting those two points.”
Karel Vejmelka made 45 saves in his fourth NHL win, and Ryan Dzingel scored twice for the Coyotes (8-23-3) after missing seven games with an upper-body injury.
“We’re lucky we had `Vejjy’ back there tonight,” Dzingel said. “He puts in a lot of work behind the scenes, and he’s prepared. For a rookie, he’s unbelievably prepared and works his tail off.”
Petr Mrazek made 16 saves for the Maple Leafs (23-9-3), who were coming off a 4-3 shootout win against the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday. Mrazek lost for the first time in regulation against the Coyotes (5-1-1).
“Our execution offensively wasn’t good enough,” Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. “We clearly didn’t make good on our chances. We generated more than enough to score far more than we did but we didn’t execute and find ways to make it harder on their goaltender once he got in a groove.”
Toronto outshot Arizona 46-18.
“The amount of shots and chances we had tonight, I thought we really controlled the play for the most part, but sometimes you run into a hot goalie,” Matthews said.
Dzingel skated to the edge of the crease and scored off Nick Schmaltz’s pass from the right wing to give the Coyotes a 2-1 lead at 12:42 of the third period.
Dzingel, playing for the first time since Dec. 10, scored for the first time since Nov. 20.
He gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead at 14:57 of the first period by scoring off a rebound of his shot that deflected off the end boards.
“It’s the first shot I’ve had in a while and I shanked one high and then I got lucky, it was a really good bounce,” Dzingel said. “I haven’t had a lot of good bounces, so it’s nice to have.”
The Maple Leafs couldn’t get the puck past Vejmelka in the first two periods despite outshooting the Coyotes 35-12.
“It’s always better for you early to see so many shots, so I got to where I felt really good,” Vejmelka said. “My team helped me, and it was a big day for us today.”
Matthews tied it 1-1 14 seconds into the third period when he adjusted the puck on his stick to shoot it around defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere from the left circle for his 24th goal of the season.
Matthews’ fourth goal in three games came before a large group of friends and family, including his parents, from nearby Scottsdale, Ariz., where he grew up, but the Maple Leafs couldn’t get the tying goal.
“Certainly we had our looks, our opportunities,” forward John Tavares said. “It’s just one of those nights where you got to find a way to break through and, unfortunately, we didn’t. We’ve got to do a better job of winning some third periods.”
The Coyotes were without coach Andre Tourigny, two assistant coaches and five players, four of them defensemen, who are in NHL COVID-19 protocol. Assistant coaches Phil Housley and Cory Stillman ran the team.
“I know they’ve got a lot of guys that are injured and in COVID protocol, but obviously [Vejmelka] stepped in and played really well,” Matthews said.
