Tyler Ennis had his first NHL hat trick, and Zach Hyman scored two goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 6-2 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday.
Mitchell Marner (one goal, two assists) had three points in a game for the 10th time this season, and Frederik Andersen made 35 saves for Toronto (41-21-4), which moved within one point of the Boston Bruins for second place in the Atlantic Division.
The Maple Leafs have won five of their past six games after a three-game losing streak. They have scored at least five goals in each win.
“This stretch obviously is super important,” Ennis said. “Boston’s winning all the time it seems. We have to keep winning.”
Matthew Tkachuk and Derek Ryan scored, and David Rittich made 26 saves for Calgary (41-18-7), which has lost two straight after a seven-game winning streak. The Flames lead the San Jose Sharks by three points for first in the Pacific Division and Western Conference.
“We’re still in a good spot,” Tkachuk said. “There’s no need to start freaking out or anything. We’re still first in the West.”
Ennis gave Toronto a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 9:50 of the first period, then scored at even strength to make it 2-0 at 17:15.
Ennis was a healthy scratch for the Maple Leafs’ 5-2 win against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.
“He’s brought a lot,” Marner said. “He’s got a lot of energy, he’s a lot of fun to be around outside the rink. He fits the team very well. He’s got a lot of skill and a lot of speed in his body. You see it out there tonight.”
They said it
“They were all over us in the beginning. They came out hard. We were up 3-0 after one. I don’t think the style of play really panned out. We stuck with it. It was a big win for us.” — Maple Leafs forward Zach Hyman
“It was a little bit of a wake-up call for us. But again, I think we have to remember that’s the first time we’ve lost two in regulation in a long time. We’re a good team.” — Flames captain Mark Giordano
