Profile:

Rachel Doerrie – ESPN – April 2nd: “The right-handed defenseman is a hot topic as scouts have varying opinions on him, likely due to his erratic play throughout the season. Mews has shown the ability to drive play from the back end, and will need to develop his decision-making and positional play to take advantage of his skating and offensive talent.”

Scott Wheeler – The Athletic – March 25th: “I love his attack and take-instead-of-give mentality offensively, and it’s complemented by NHL skill, an NHL shot and an ability to execute against coverage and pressure to the middle third of the ice (he’s an impressive slot passer). His business inside the offensive zone, jumping in and out of the play, will occasionally catch him in a bad spot, but can also really impact play and offense when his team needs it.”

Steven Ellis – Daily Faceoff – March 9th: “He’s as impressive with the puck as you’ll find among OHL defenders, but it’s easy to notice that he only started playing defense a few years ago. That’s because he’s so dominant with the puck and makes his own-zone play a lesser priority. If he can clean that up, he’ll be a steal.”

Mike Morreale – NHL.com – March 1st: “Mews (6-0, 183) is a well-conditioned, offensive-minded defenseman with good hockey sense, a high compete level and can get shots through to the net from the point. The 17-year-old right-handed shot has been a big contributor on the power play.”

Jason Bukala – Sportsnet – February 27th: “You can see how he thinks the game offensively might have something to do with his years playing forward. Mews is a play maker/transitional defenceman. There’s some risk/reward with his approach, but also no denying what he can provide offensively.”
