Auston Matthews and William Nylander each scored two goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 5-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday.
Morgan Rielly and Mitchell Marner each had three assists, Alexander Kerfoot had two assists, and Matt Murray made 18 saves for the Maple Leafs, who finished the preseason 5-2-0.
Pius Suter scored, and Jussi Olkinuora made 13 saves on 15 shots in 31:55 for the Red Wings, who finished 3-5-0. Victor Brattstrom made eight saves in relief.
Suter gave Detroit a 1-0 lead with a shot that went bar down from the right face-off circle at 11:33 of the first period.
Nylander tied it 1-1 at 15:24, also scoring from the right circle. Defenseman Mark Giordano had the primary assist, his fifth of the preseason.
Denis Malgin scored his fourth goal when he split the defense and beat Olkinuora glove side at 11:55 of the second period to give Toronto a 2-1 lead.
The Maple Leafs scored three power-play goals in the third period. Matthews made it 3-1 with a one-timer from the top of the left circle at 2:12. Nylander extended the lead to 4-1 at 7:02, picking up a loose puck in the right circle for his fourth goal of the preseason, and Matthews scored his second goal of the game from the high slot at 13:49 for the 5-1 final.
Toronto defenseman Jake Muzzin and forward Pierre Engvall each played his first game of the preseason.
