Marner scores four points, Maple Leafs top Devils for fifth win in row
Mitchell Marner had two goals and two assists to extend his goal streak to seven games for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 7-1 win against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Tuesday.
Jack Campbell made 31 saves for the Maple Leafs (29-10-3), who have won five in a row. Campbell rebounded after being pulled in the first period after allowing three goals on nine shots in a 6-4 win against the Devils on Monday.
Jack Hughes scored for the Devils (15-25-5), who have lost six in a row and nine of their past 10 (1-9-0). Jon Gillies allowed six goals on 28 shots before being replaced in the third period by Akira Schmid, who made seven saves on eight shots.
Jason Spezza scored on a snap shot from the slot to give the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead at 2:13 into the first period.
Auston Matthews scored on a wrist shot from the high slot for a 2-0 lead at 8:38 of the first. David Kampf made it 3-0 just 25 seconds later on a wrist shot from the slot at 9:04.
Marner scored on a snap shot from the slot to give Toronto a 4-0 lead at 15:31 of the first.
Michael Bunting scored on a 2-on-1 with Marner following a Devils turnover at 8:25 of the second period for a 5-0 lead.
Pierre Engvall made it 6-0 on a shot from the right face-off circle at 15:12 of the second.
Hughes scored on a wrist shot from the right face-off circle for the Devils at 3:31 of the third period.
Marner scored his second of the game at 5:57 of the third for the 7-1 final. Marner has eight goals and 15 points during his NHL career-high goal streak.
The Devils went 0-for-3 on the power play, including a two-man advantage for 1:46 in the second period.
