The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has acquired forward Riley Nash from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a conditional seventh round selection in the 2022 NHL Draft. The seventh round selection will become a sixth round selection if Nash appears in 25 percent of the Maple Leafs’ playoff games in 2021.
Nash, 31, has appeared in 37 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets this season and recorded a pair of goals and five assists. In 578 career NHL regular season games between Carolina, Columbus and Boston, he has recorded 172 points (63 goals, 109 assists), while adding two goals and six assists in 32 career Stanley Cup playoff games.
Nash was originally selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round (21st overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft.
My Take:
The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired a player on long term injury reserve witch allows them to exceed the cap by the amount of the players cap hit. Riley Nash’s cap hit is $2.75M, which is in addition to Frederik Andersen’s cap hit witch was put on LTIR retroactive to when his injury happened.
Riley Nash is reported to be on track to return by the time the playoffs start, which would be great for the Leafs as they now have a shut down 4th line center. In my opinion Kerfoot will be moved this trade deadline to make room for a bigger acquisition and Riley Nash is the replacement as the 4th line center.
