Campbell makes 31 saves for Maple Leafs in shootout win against Jets
Jack Campbell made 31 saves for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 2-1 shootout win against the Winnipeg Jets at Bell MTS Place on Friday.
Campbell improved to 8-0-0 for Toronto, which swept the two-game set after defeating Winnipeg 3-1 here Wednesday.
“It’s been pretty fun and the team’s winning, so that’s always number one,” Campbell said. “Just trying to keep it going and just keep getting better every game.”
Travis Dermott scored for the Maple Leafs (24-10-3), who are 5-0-1 in the past six games. Jason Spezza scored in the first round of the shootout and Campbell did not allow a goal on three shootout attempts.
“Stellar, as it has been the whole season,” Dermott said of Campbell. “He’s turning into a guy that we’re relying upon a lot and he’s shown up every day so far. We definitely could have given him a little more help tonight, but he stole the show like he always seems to do.”
Andrew Copp scored, and Connor Hellebuyck made 37 saves in his 300th NHL game for the Jets (22-13-3).
“I think he’s the best in the League, and we’re lucky to have him,” Copp said of Hellebuyck. “I think he makes big save after big save, especially on that penalty kill in overtime (four saves). He’s just so solid back there and we have all the confidence in the world in him. It’s nothing we didn’t already know, but it just further shows just how elite he is.”
Dermott gave the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead at 5:16 of the second period before Copp tied the game 1-1 at 11:50 with his NHL career-high 12th goal.
“I won’t look at these two games as an offensive test for our team,” Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice said. “These two games won’t have a barometer on how long I stay with these lines. There’s one or two more changes we’ll look at between now and the end of the year. I won’t take these two games as an assessment of what they’re capable of.”
