Frederik Andersen made 42 saves and had an assist to help the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-3 victory against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Thursday.
Kasperi Kapanen scored two goals, Mitchell Marner had a goal and two assists, and John Tavares extended his point streak to seven games for Toronto (13-6-0), which has won five of six.
The Maple Leafs trailed 3-2 after the first period then scored three unanswered goals.
“Second and third periods was a great response by us,” Andersen said.
Kevin Labanc, Joe Pavelski and Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored for San Jose (10-7-3), and Martin Jones made 29 saves.
“We’ve struggled at times to play with leads,” Pavelski said. “We just haven’t stayed on the attack. Some small detail mistakes. I’m sure it’s not staying to process. The frustrating part is we haven’t played to our identity. We do it for a few minutes and then we do this or that and suddenly there’s a breakaway, then another breakaway.
“We’re just hanging them out to dry with these odd-man rushes and chances. It happened again tonight. It can’t happen five times a night. We can see the same mistakes happening, we talk about them. We want to do it right. When these same mistakes happen it kind of deflates us a bit.”
Hook, line and sinker.
