The Toronto Maple Leafs scored four goals in a span of 3:54 in the second period – three on the power play and one shorthanded – in a 6-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Scotiabank Arena.
Jake Gardiner scored the first of three straight power-play goals when he gave the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead at 12:47. John Tavares scored his fifth of the preseason to make it 3-1 at 14:58, and Patrick Marleau extended the lead to 4-1 at 15:25. Par Lindholm scored shorthanded at 16:41 for a 5-1 advantage.
Dylan Larkin brought the Red Wings within 5-2 at 1:10 of the third period before Gardiner made it 6-2 at 15:41.
Nazem Kadri gave Toronto a 1-0 lead 1:38 into the first period, but Gustav Nyquist tied it 1-1 on the power play at 10:21.
Josh Leivo had three assists, and Frederik Andersen made 23 saves for the Maple Leafs.
Jimmy Howard played the first two periods for the Red Wings and made 19 saves on 24 shots. Harri Sateri made three saves.
