The condition on the first-round pick the #Leafs gave up is that it’s Top 10 lottery protected. If in the top 10, it will slide to 2021. Expectation, of course, is that Marleau agreed to waive NMC so #Canes will buy him out and he can become an UFA.

Hurricanes will try to convince Marleau to play for them but if the answer is No they will buy him out and make him UFA.

Kyle Dubas did the near-impossible. He found a place for Patrick Marleau.

Patrick Marleau waives his NMC for trade to Carolina and will be bought out by #hurricanes. He'd like to return to San Jose in free agency.

So the “sweetener” to trade Patrick Marleau and his $6.25M cap hit is a conditional first in 2020 and seventh, also in 2020.

Apparently, the condition is related to whether the Leafs' first-round choice is a top-10 pick. If it is, Carolina gets Toronto's first-rounder in 2021.
That's a steep price to get rid of a contract. It's not like Marleau is Lucic. He can still play.

The #leafs did not retain any salary on Patrick Marleau in the deal with Carolina. That opens another $6.25M for them to do business.
