The Fourth Period: The Sabres could be close to trading captain Jason Pominville. Patrick Caisse of TVA Sports said that the Sabres have asked Pominville to submit a list of eight teams he won’t be traded too. The Sharks, Blue Jackets, Canadiens, Canucks and Kings have shown interest in Pominville.
James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: The Maple Leafs want to make a trade that will help in short and long-term, preferrably a ”hockey” trade.
“We’re not trying to sell off players for future assets,” Nonis said on Monday after the team finished practice. “We’re either going to, likely, add a piece or two or stand pat. I wouldn’t say we wouldn’t move players or even UFAs, but we wouldn’t move them for draft picks. The players have worked hard to try and get themselves in position. And if we make deals now, by and large those will be for pieces that can help us.”
On the Kiprusoff and Luongo talk,
“It’s not a priority,” Nonis said of adding a goalie. “It’s the same as every other position. If we can add a goaltender that strengthens our group and helps the guys that we have here, then we would look to do it. If not, as we’ve said all along, we think we have two NHL-calibre goalies. They’ve proved that so far this year, and goaltending hasn’t been an issue.”
Josh Rimer: (before the Kiprusoff talk picked up) Rimer is hearing that there is good chance that Roberto Luongo could end with the Maple Leafs.
Farhan Lalji: Canucks GM Mike Gillis said that ”it might not be the right time” to trade Luongo and suggested that it might be easier to trade him in the summer. Gillis added, “we’re talking to 4 teams with varying levels of activity and various proposals”
Gary Lawless: The Jets were in the hunt for center Michal Handzus but not able to land him.
David Pagnotta: The Flyers are not actively shopping Sean Couturier, but if they are able to land a top-two defenseman or a top-line scorer, they could move him.
L.A. Lariviere: Ryane Clowe’s agent wouldn’t say if the Canadiens are among the front-runners, ”I’ll let Marc Bergevin comment on their involvement.” The Canadiens were still in on Clowe (as of late last night). Clowe’s agent said it could go down to the trade deadline day with the other bidders.
David Pagnotta: RDS is reporting that Clowe wants a 7 or 8 year contract extension. Adrian Dater: “If Ryane Clowe gets a 7-year contract extension, which GM agrees to that, please hand in your playbook now.”
Andy Strickland: Teams that have shown some interest in Clowe: Bruins, Flyers, Canadiens, Blackhawks, Wild and Canucks.
David Pollak: With the Sharks looking to trade Clowe, it’s good sign that they like James Sheppard on the 3rd line.
Bruce Garrioch: The Sharks are still trying to move Dan Boyle.
Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk:
On if there’s any news on potential extensions on Jaromir Jagr, Eric Nystrom or Derek Roy
“I don’t really have any update on that. No.”
On if that would affect how they might deal with things in the next two days
“I think so. I think it’s all part of it. Have to see where we’re at. Listening to calls.”
On how hard it is to balance things
“I think so [it’s hard to balance what is being offered and the like]. I think that’s accurate. So we’ll just have to wait and see. We’ve got 48 hours here.”
