The Toronto Maple Leafs claimed enforcer Frazer McLaren off waivers from the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.
McLaren, known for his physical play, was drafted by the Sharks in the seventh round (203rd overall) in the 2007 NHL Draft and has spent the bulk of his professional career with the Worcester Sharks of the American Hockey League.
In 40 career NHL games, the 25-year-old has one goal, six points and 85 penalty minutes.
McLaren, who played his junior career in the Western Hockey League with the Portland Winter Hawks and Moose Jaw Warriors, has played one game this season, but was held off the score sheet and registered just 6:54 of ice time.
It’s unknown at this time if McLaren will see time with the Leafs or if he will be sent to their AHL affiliate Toronto Marlies, but the Leafs will be without one of their tougher guys for at least the next week.
Maple Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle said that winger Mike Brown, who strained his shoulder, would miss a minimum of seven days, as the team officially moved him to the injured reserve Thursday. The earliest Brown can return to the lineup is Feb. 6.
