Brian Burke, President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Wednesday that the hockey club has signed free agent forward Spencer Abbott to a one-year entry level contract. Abbott has also signed an amateur tryout contract with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League and will join the Marlies for the remainder of the regular season and Calder Cup playoffs.
Abbott, a 23-year-old native of Hamilton, Ontario played 39 games for the University of Maine Black Bears this season and led the entire NCAA in scoring with 62 points (21 goals, 41 assists). The 5’10, 175-pound forward is a top ten finalist for the Hobey Baker Award given annually to the top NCAA hockey player. As well, he was the Hockey East player of the year, named the Hockey East player of the month in December and February, and won the Hockey East player of the week award on three occasions. In four seasons at Maine, he registered 54 goals, 92 assists and 146 points with 66 minutes in penalties in 151 games played.
